Vehicle Far-side Impact Crashes

چکیده
This is a summary of a paper which first appeared in the International Journal of Crashworthiness under the title: “Side Impact Protection Occupants in the Far-Side Seat”, Vol. 3, No. 2, pp 93-122. Readers are directed to the full paper for a more comprehensive discussion of the issues presented here. Much of the applied vehicle side impact occupant protection research to date has concentrated on occupants seated beside the struck side of vehicles. These occupants are defined as ‘near-side’ occupants. Real world crash evidence however has shown that occupants seated on the side away from the struck side, defined as ‘far-side’ occupants, are still subject to a risk of injury. This paper examines side impact epidemiology from an injury causation perspective, and endeavours to explain evidence indicating head injuries and seat belt related injuries constitute a significant proportion of all far-side impact injuries. Injury mechanisms and key dynamic parameters governing injury severity are detailed. Computer models simulating the dynamic motion of vehicle farside occupants are described. Occupant kinematics and injury parameters from the models are then compared with real world crash case studies. The paper finally suggests vehicle design strategies which may reduce far-side injuries. Some alternative restraint systems are proposed as potential countermeasures to reduce occupant injuries.

Digges 1 INJURIES TO RESTRAINED OCCUPANTS IN FAR-SIDE CRASHES
Occupants exposed to far-side crashes are those seated on the side of the vehicle opposite the struck side. This study uses the NASS/CDS 1988-98 to determine distributions of serious injuries among restrained occupants exposed to far-side crashes and the sources of the injuries. Vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests were conducted to study dummy kinematics. The NASS/CDS indicated that the head account...
متن کاملValidating Lower Limb Injury Mechanisms in Side Impact Crashes
Side-impact crashes are often segregated into nearside and far-side crashes because the injury mechanisms in these crash types differ. Most sideimpact research and regulations are based on nearside occupant injuries, but far-side occupants (Figure 1.B) can also incur serious harm. Near-side occupants are those which are situated on the same side as the impacted side of the vehicle (Figure 1.A)....
متن کاملCharacteristics of the injury environment in far-side crashes.
The population of occupants in far-side crashes that are documented in the US National database (NASS/CDS) was studied. The annual number of front seat occupants with serious or fatal injuries in far-side planar and rollover crashes was 17,194. The crash environment that produces serious and fatal injuries to belted front seat occupants in planar far-side crashes was investigated in detail. It ...

The magnitude of leftward bias demonstrated in pseudoneglect has been found to differ between younger and older adults in laboratory settings. The objective of this study was to examine the association between age and asymmetries in navigation in a naturalistic setting by examining the frequency of the location of impact on participants' vehicles during crashes and near crashes. The location of...

A cooperative research project with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was conducted to evaluate the capability of a Tubular Thoracic Cushion (TTC) airbag concept to significantly reduce rib deflections for the SID-IIs dummy in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) side-impact barrier test. The concept of the TTC airbag was to efficiently distribute a major...
